The historic city center of Trogir is on the World Heritage List and is gorgeous. What are the best things to do in Trogir? Discover it now.
Why do you want to discover Trogir?
Trogir is a Croatian town in the bay of the Kaštela, not far from Split. It is a city with a long history, which you can clearly see in the beautiful old city center, which is located on an island. The historic center is mostly car-free and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. With all the narrow streets, the churches, and the many boutique shops and cozy restaurants, Trogir is a great place to explore.
Along the south side of the center is a large boulevard full of terraces and palm trees, a good place to enjoy Croatian cuisine. Would you also like to relax on the beach during your city break? Near Trogir, you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia.
Things to do in Trogir
What to do in Trogir? These are the most beautiful sights in Trogir.
Wander through the narrow alleys
The old town of Trogir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains a maze of narrow streets. Special details can be found everywhere, such as beautiful doors and old texts or images in the facades of the buildings. It’s great fun discovering them all.
Check out the city gates
In Trogir, you can still see the remains of the old city walls. Two gates have been preserved, one on the north side (the land gate) and one on the south side (the sea gate). Both gates have beautiful ornaments and are a sight to see. You should definitely check them out to admire the details.
Visit the Cathedral of St. Lawrence
The most striking building in the old town of Trogir is undoubtedly the Cathedral of St. Lawrence. The construction of the cathedral started in the twelfth century but was not completed until the seventeenth century. As a result, you can also see various architectural styles from different centuries in the cathedral, which makes it a very interesting sight. Especially the portal of the cathedral (from 1240) is beautiful to see.
Good to know: a visit to the Cathedral of St. Lawrence is not free but costs 30 kuna (October 2021, about €4). Your shoulders and knees should be covered.
Climb the bell tower
With your ticket to the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, you can also climb the bell tower. This is one of the best things to do in Trogir, from here you have a great view of Trogir and you can even see the city of Split. Make sure you wear sturdy footwear, the steps are narrow and can be very slippery.
Check out Palača Ćipiko
Right next to the cathedral, you can see the facade of Palača Ćipiko. This used to be a palace of the Ćipiko family and it dates back to the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, you cannot visit it but the facade alone is very beautiful to see. I would recommend eating ice cream on the steps by the cathedral with a view of this beautiful building so that you can discover all the cool details.
Go for a walk on the boulevard
Along the south side of the old city center is a long boulevard full of palm trees. There are also many benches and many restaurants with terraces. Daily (small) cruise ships moor along the quay. There is always something to see and therefore this is also a perfect place to go for a stroll or just relax and watch what’s happing all around you.
Visit Kastel Kamerlengo
On the very west side of the boulevard, you will find Kaštel Kamerlengo. This is a fortress from the fifteenth century. It is used for events and is open to visitors. From the walls and the tower, you have a beautiful view of Trogir. It is a place that many people go to around sunset because it is clearly visible from here.
Watch the sunset
The sunset along the coast in Croatia is beautiful and you can also see it very well from Trogir. Grab a beer or a bottle of wine from the supermarket, settle down on the quay behind Kaštel Kamerlengo and enjoy this beautiful natural spectacle.
Take a trip to the Marina
The Marina is located across the water from the old town. Here are a number of huge yachts and many beautiful (sailing) boats. Always fun to walk by and see what’s there. In addition, there are also several cozy terraces where you can relax for a snack or a drink.
Visit Okrug Gornji Beach
Do you want to relax for a bit during your city trip? Not far from Trogir you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia. You have to go to Okrug Gornji, a village just south of Trogir. There is a mile-long beach of small white pebbles (it feels like sand, it doesn’t hurt when you sit down) and the water is incredibly clear. A lovely place to relax for a while.
Fun day trips from Trogir
Most people visit Trogir as a day trip from Split, but Trogir itself is actually a much nicer base because it is a bit smaller. Due to its central location, you can also make very fun day trips from Trogir. A few recommendations:
Krka National Park
Krka National Park is about an hour’s drive from Trogir and is full of natural beauty. Here you can see steep cliffs, waterfalls and beautiful lakes. The best part is that (unlike the Plitvice Lakes) there are some places where you are allowed to go for a swim.
Do you have no transport yourself and do you have no patience for the local bus? You can also book an organized tour to Krka National Park from Trogir.
Šibenik
The city of Šibenik is only an hour by car (or bus) north of Trogir and this city also has a beautiful medieval city center. In addition to several large fortresses (hello, beautiful view!), you can get lost in all the super narrow streets in the city center. Be sure to take a look at the Cathedral of St. James, a beautiful building that was also used as a filming location for Game of Thrones (The Iron Bank).
Split
Trogir is a great base for a holiday in Croatia, but nearby Split is also very beautiful. Split is the second-largest city in Croatia after Zagreb and has a beautiful old town. You can visit the Palace of Diocletian, a Roman palace from the fourth century that has largely been preserved. It’s absolutely gorgeous!
Tip: there is a bus from Trogir to Split every 20 minutes, but in the summer months there is also a boat. Taking the boat is a lot more fun and not even that expensive. Check this website for times and prices.
Island tour
Along the coast of Croatia, there are many islands and from almost every coastal town you can discover several of them on the basis of a tour. With this island tour, you will discover five different islands in one day and visit the famous Blue Cave.
