How to get to the top of Whiteface Mountain (New York State, USA)

One of my favorite stops during my road trip in Ontario and New York State was Whiteface Mountain. This is one of the highest peaks of the Adirondack Mountains and it’s very easy to visit. In this article, I’ll tell you how to get to the top of Whiteface Mountain.

Drive to the top

Whiteface Mountain - Memorial highway
From the small (and cute) town of Wilmington, you can take the Whiteface Veterans’ Memorial Highway (431) to Whiteface Mountain. After a few minutes, you’ll pass a very special (and a little weird) place: Santa’s Workshop. This looks like a theme park with a Christmas theme. Personally, I would skip it, but if you’re really into Christmas, you can visit it for $24,95.

When you reach the intersection, take the road on the left. Soon you will see the toll house, where you have to pay $12 (and add $8 for every additional passenger). While you continue driving, the views will get better and better.

Spectacular views on the road

When you’re driving the winding road, you’ll see some spectacular views. Make sure to make a few stops on the way up, because most of the viewpoints are on the right side of the road.

Winding road
When you arrive at the end of the road, there’s a big car park. Pick a place to park your car, because you have to go on a short hike to reach the top. There is also an elevator, but it’s closed most of the time (I believe it’s broken).

Beginning of the trail
The trail starts at a building that looks like a castle (awesome!) at an altitude of 4600 feet. You have to climb approximately 250 feet to reach the top. The pathway looks scarier than it is, it’s surrounded by fences pretty much all the way to the top. The hike is very scenic, make sure to look around and enjoy the view at some points.

Amazing views from the top

Op de top
Before you know it, you’ve reached the top! With an altitude of 4876 feet, it’s the fifth highest mountain in New York State. Don’t get to close to the edge, there are no fences at the top and it can be very windy. It’s almost a 360-degree view, and it’s awesome!
There’s also a weather station at the top, where you can learn something about the weather in the region and about the mountain.

Whiteface Mountain - trailhead
If you’re into it, it’s also possible to hike to the top. You can park your car on the Marble Mountain Road (on your left, just after you pass Santa’s Workshop), here you will find the Whiteface Mountain Trailhead. It’s a 9.3 miles (about 15 kilometers) round trip and you will climb 3600 feet. I think it’s a hard climb, but well worth it. You can read more about it on this website.

Where to stay?

There are a couple of small towns in the area where you can stay. I would recommend staying in either Wilmington of Lake Placid. It’s easy to book a room on
