Hike the Minett Trail to explore the interesting Minett region in the south of Luxembourg! Check out this post for practical tips & amazing accommodations.
About the Minett Trail
The Minett Trail is a long-distance hike in southern Luxembourg, in the Minett region. It has about 90 kilometers of hiking trails. The route between Clemency and Bettembourg is 63.5 kilometers, in addition, there are separate (circular) walks with which you can extend the route.
I myself have walked several sections of the Minett Trail and I really liked it. There are many beautiful places to discover in this (industrial) region! In this article, I will tell you a little more about the special Minett region, the stages of the trail, and special accommodations along the trail.
About the Minett region
The Minett region is located in southern Luxembourg, roughly between Luxembourg City and the French border. This region has an eventful past that is closely tied to the iron industry. Iron ore has been mined in this region since Roman times, giving the area an economic boost and leading to the development of numerous mining towns and villages. The 19th and 20th centuries were the heyday of iron mining in the Minett (which means “small mine”), with the town of Esch-sur-Alzette as the beating heart of the industry.
The mines attracted workers from all over Europe, resulting in a multicultural society in the Minett. However, the glory days of the iron industry were not long-lasting. In the 1960s and 1970s, the mines gradually closed their doors, which had a huge impact on the region. Unemployment, vacancy, and pollution were the visible consequences.
But the Minettregio wanted a fresh start. Instead of lamenting the past, they committed themselves to a new future. The focus came to be on conservation, tourism, and sustainable development. Old mining sites were turned into natural parks, while charming villages and towns were restored.
Today, the Minett region is a green gem with a fascinating industrial heritage. Hiking the Minett Trail is the perfect way to explore the new man-made landscape. The trail takes you past old mine shafts, blast furnaces, and excavations, which bear witness to the past.

What makes the Minett Trail so interesting?
Of course, what makes the Minett Trail extra special is the extraordinary landscape created thanks to its industrial history. The trail passes through several natural areas and many villages and towns.
This is why it’s very easy to take the bus or train from one place to another. And the free public transportation in Luxembourg makes it even easier. Another thing I noticed is that there are regular information signs along the trails (they are in French/German, so it’s handy to have Google Translate on your phone), so you learn more about the special environment you’re hiking in. Very fun and educational!
If you want to make your hike extra special, it is recommended that you stay overnight in one of the 11 Kabaischen located along the Minett Trail. These are very special accommodations, which you can read more about later in this article.
Minett Trail stages
Let’s start with the trail itself. How many stages does the Minett Trail have and what do they look like? There are a total of 10 separate stages you can walk, ranging from 6 to 16 kilometers. These are:
- Clemency – Pétange Gare – 7.2 kilometers – Difficulty: easy
- Pétange Gare – Differdange Gare – 15.7 kilometers – Difficulty: moderate
- Differdange Gare – Belval-Rédange Gare – 8.2 kilometers – Difficulty: moderate
- Belval-Rédange Gare – Esch-sur-Alzette Gare – 6.5 kilometers – Difficulty: easy
- Esch-sur-Alzette Gare – Tétange Gare – 12 kilometers – Difficulty: medium
- Tétange Gare – Rumelange Gare – 7.7 kilometers – Difficulty: easy
- Rumelange Gare – Dudelange Gare – 10.9 kilometers – Difficulty: medium
- Esch-sur-Alzette Gare – Schifflange Gare – 8.9 kilometers – Difficulty: moderate
- Schifflange Gare – Bergem – 6.1 kilometers – Difficulty: easy
- Bergem – Gare Bettembourg – 11.7 kilometers – Difficulty: medium

Each stage can be walked separately, you can very easily get to a starting or ending point by public transport. Gare is station in French, so you can already see from the stages that they often start or end at a train station.
Experienced hikers can tie together a number of stages fairly easily, to walk the entire trail in just a few days. For more information about the stages and GPX files, visit the Minett Trail website.
In general, hiking trails in Luxembourg are very well-marked, and the Minett Trail is no exception. The marking is a kind of red M, which you see everywhere: on trees, on signs, on poles, on benches, etc. Getting lost on the trail is virtually impossible.

If you want to see the route on a map, you can download a brochure and map from the Minett Trail website. Hardcopy maps are also often found in museums and information points along the trail (I found them in Ellergron, for example). You can also download GPX files on the website, so you can navigate with your phone as well. You can load them into apps like Gaia and Komoot.
Staying in the Kabaischen
As I mentioned earlier, there are very special accommodations along the route. These they call Kabaischen. They are a kind of (luxury) cabins in a very special building or place. There are eleven in total and I’ve been lucky to stay in three different Kabaischen when I was exploring the Minett region.
Pump it up!
The accommodation Pump it up! is located near Esch-sur-Alzette in the Ellegron nature reserve. It consists of a container with an inflated sphere on top, which makes it look a bit like a mushroom.
From the accommodation, you can easily visit the museum and discover several beautiful hiking trails. There are also a few restaurants within walking distance.

Biergemer Kabaisercher
In the village of Bergem are three tiny houses on a hill. They are quite small, but you’ll find everything you need in a very cozy little house. At the front and back is a large window, giving you a nice view of the other cottages and the green surroundings. In the village, there are several restaurants and a bakery.

Floater
In Dudelange, near Dudelange-Usines station, you’ll find the Floater in the water next to an old water tower. Yes, this accommodation is located on the water! It has a very large window on one side overlooking the water tower. In front of it are several seating areas, so you can fully enjoy the beautiful view.
Dudelange is a nice base for exploring the area. There are lots of restaurants (be sure to stop by KANTIN, the food here is delicious!) and there’s no shortage of hiking trails either. Dudelange also has several train stations and a bus station, making it very easy to travel to other places in the Minett region.

I thought it was really amazing to stay in the Kabaischen, they made my visit to this region even better. Every accommodation where I slept had a kitchen or a kitchenette, so you can prepare your own meals here. On this page you will find an overview of all the Kabaischen.
Practical tips and frequently asked questions
Now you already know a lot about the Minett Trail, but there’s more! Here are some practical tips and answers to frequently asked questions.
What is the best time to hike the Minett Trail?
You can hike the trail year-round, but of course, in winter it can be very slippery on the trails. My advice is to hike the trail between May and October, that’s when it shows off its beautiful green surroundings best and you have the best chance of good weather.
Difficulty
The trail is not very difficult, which is why you can walk the Minett Trail with the whole family. The trail is easy to follow and although there is the occasional small climb or descent, they are never very long or very steep.
Transportation
As you have seen, each stage is very well served by public transportation. And that’s one of the best things in Luxembourg! Buses and trains usually run every hour, most of the time even more often. You can board right away because public transport in Luxembourg is free. No tickets are needed! Check Mobiliteit.lu or Google Maps for schedules and the nearest train station or bus stop.
