10 Things to do in Golden BC: the perfect base for outdoor fun

Looking for things to do in Golden BC? This charming town in Western Canada is the ideal base for exploring nearby national parks and local highlights.

About Golden

Tucked away in the heart of British Columbia, Golden is a haven of tranquility and charm. If there’s one place in Western Canada where I could easily stay for weeks on end, it’s this cozy little town. Located in a picturesque valley carved by the Kicking Horse River, Golden invites you to slow down and soak in its laid-back atmosphere. Yet, if you’re looking to enjoy natural beauty between moments of relaxation, this is the perfect base. Golden is surrounded by several iconic national parks, including Glacier, Yoho, and Kootenay.

The town originated in the late nineteenth century as an important stop for the railroad industry, a legacy still visible in the many freight trains that regularly pass through the valley. Over time, Golden grew into a popular destination for adventurers and peace-seekers alike.

For me, Golden was truly an oasis during my trip: compact, cozy, and full of great spots that are easy to explore on foot. I loved hiking along the ice-blue Kicking Horse River, savoring some of the best coffee at local coffee shops, and soaking in the town’s relaxed vibe. It felt like a much-needed breather amidst the rugged outdoor adventures of the Canadian Rockies.

In this article, you’ll discover the best activities to enjoy in Golden and explore the stunning natural surroundings of this atmospheric town.

The best things to do in Golden BC

Golden may be small, but it offers a surprising variety of activities. Here are some of the most enjoyable things to do in and around the town.

Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge

You can’t miss the stunning ice-blue Kicking Horse River as it cuts through Golden. Several bridges span the river, but the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge is undoubtedly the most beautiful. This wooden pedestrian bridge, the longest of its kind in Canada, is a peaceful spot to pause and take in the views. Standing on the bridge, you’ll hear the rushing water below and feel the cool mountain breeze on your face—an experience that captures the essence of Golden perfectly.

Hike along the Kicking Horse River (Rotary Loop)

As I crossed the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge, a sign with information about a hiking trail immediately caught my eye. Of course, my hiking heart skipped a beat! The Rotary Loop is a well-marked trail that follows the river and winds through Golden itself. It’s the perfect way to explore the town while enjoying a dose of nature.

I decided to walk half the loop (a full lap felt a bit long, especially since I didn’t have bear spray with me). It was wonderful to be out in nature for a while, though I couldn’t help being a little wary of encountering wildlife. Thankfully, all I saw were birds and squirrels!

Golden Skybridge

Do you dare to cross a spectacular suspension bridge? Just outside Golden, you’ll find the Golden Skybridge, the highest suspension bridge in Canada. Suspended 130 meters above a canyon, it’s not for the faint of heart, but the breathtaking views of the surrounding forests and mountains make it worth the adventure.

For an extra thrill, you can try ziplining or other adventurous activities near the bridge. Will you dare to take the leap?

Rafting on the Kicking Horse River

Looking for more adrenaline? Rafting on the Kicking Horse River is a must-try. While the section of the river flowing through Golden is relatively calm, further downstream you’ll find some of Canada’s most powerful rapids. It’s one of the top destinations for rafting in the country! With the guidance of experienced professionals, you’ll brave the wild waters while taking in the stunning mountain and forest views.

I didn’t have time to try rafting myself on this trip, but it’s definitely on my list for next time. The idea of experiencing the valley from the water while navigating the rushing rapids sounds incredible.

Downtown Golden (for delicious food & drinks)

If the adventure of the Golden Skybridge or rafting feels a little too intense, downtown Golden is the perfect place to relax. Though it’s small (the best spots are along 9 Avenue North and near the river), it’s full of charming local shops, great restaurants, and cozy cafes.

I spent a couple of days here exploring, often stopping for a cup of coffee. My personal favorites? Ethos Cafe for a delicious brew, Wandering Fern Cafe for its inviting atmosphere, and the Golden Bakery & Deli, where I enjoyed a fantastic cinnamon roll on their waterfront patio.

For dinner, I can’t recommend Red Tomato Pies enough. Their pizza is one of the best I’ve ever had in Canada. On a sunny day, I picked up a pizza and enjoyed it on a bench by the rive. A perfect combination of amazing food and a beautiful view.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort

If you head west of Golden and up the mountain (toward Terminator Peak), you’ll reach the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Whether it’s summer or winter, there’s always something to do here. In winter, you can ski or snowshoe, while summer offers gondola rides, stunning vistas, and scenic mountain hikes. It’s a true outdoor paradise!

Cedar Lake

For those seeking tranquility, Cedar Lake is just a short drive from Golden. The area features a lovely campground and several hiking trails, some of which lead to unnamed lakes tucked away in the forest. On warm summer days, you can swim, kayak, or simply relax by the water and soak in the peace and quiet.

Golden: the perfect base for three national parks

Nestled in one of the most beautiful regions of British Columbia, Golden is surrounded by three incredible national parks: Glacier, Yoho, and Kootenay. Each park offers unique attractions and is ideal for a day trip from Golden. Here’s what makes each of them special:

Glacier National Park

Just a 45-minute drive from Golden, Glacier National Park is a rugged landscape filled with snow-capped peaks and deep valleys. One of the highlights is Rogers Pass, a historic site with spectacular views and a visitor center where you can learn about the park’s fascinating railroad history and diverse wildlife.

For hikers, there are some fantastic trails. The Loop Brook Trail is a favorite, leading you past the remains of old railroad bridges. I also loved the Bear Creek Falls Trail, which, although short, is steep and rewards you with a stunning waterfall at the end. Highly recommended!

Yoho National Park

Less than a half-hour drive from Golden, Yoho National Park is incredibly accessible and filled with breathtaking sights. On one of my visits, I spent the morning exploring Golden and then headed to Yoho in the afternoon to hike to Wapta Falls, an impressive waterfall you shouldn’t miss.

If you have more time, make sure to visit Emerald Lake, known for its vivid green waters, and the spectacular Takakkaw Falls, one of Canada’s tallest waterfalls. During one visit, I even saw my first bear here – an unforgettable moment!

Kootenay National Park

While Kootenay National Park is a little further from Golden (just over an hour’s drive), the journey there is an adventure in itself. Along the way, you’ll pass the world’s largest wooden paddle – a quirky and fun roadside attraction!

Once you enter the park at Radium Hot Springs, you’re greeted by stunning views. Keep your speed in check and your eyes open, as wildlife often crosses the road. I barely entered the park before I had to stop for a group of mountain goats!

Kootenay offers a variety of experiences. You can soak in the relaxing natural waters of Radium Hot Springs, visit the bright green Olive Lake, or take an adventurous hike to Dog Lake.

The most striking spots, however, are at the southern end of the Kootenay Highway. The Marble Canyon features dramatic rock formations, while the colorful pools of the Paint Pots are unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere. Kootenay National Park feels like a hidden gem, offering tranquility and natural beauty without the crowds of the more famous parks.

As you can see, Golden is a perfect base for exploring these three national parks, each offering its own unique charm. Whether you’re hiking to waterfalls, soaking in hot springs, or marveling at rugged peaks, you’re sure to create unforgettable memories.
