The best things to do in Trinidad Cuba

One of the highlights of a trip to Cuba is a visit to the old town of Trinidad. What are the best things to do in Trinidad Cuba? Check it out.

About Trinidad

The town of Trinidad is an absolute must-see when you’re traveling to Cuba. Trinidad was founded by the Spaniards in the 15th century and was the most prosperous place in the country in the 18th and 19th centuries thanks to sugar cane, cattle, and tobacco.

When you visit Trinidad, it feels like you’re going back to that time. Brightly colored colonial buildings, cobbled streets, and large squares. Because of all that beauty, Trinidad has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.

In addition, there is also a lot to see in the vicinity of Trinidad, including a large nature park full of waterfalls. So make sure to take your time when visiting Trinidad.

What to do in Trinidad? Here are some tips:

Explore the beautiful streets

I immediately fell in love with the beautiful streets of Trinidad. So many colorful houses, churches, vintage cars, and occasionally some people driving by with horses and carriages. It’s like going back in time, it’s so interesting! So take the time to wander through the cobbled streets of Trinidad, you will discover new details every time.

Relax at Playa Ancon

A few kilometers outside the city you will find a beautiful white sandy beach. It’s really worth it to take a taxi and spend some time here for a few hours. Every now and then some vendors come by selling food and drinks, so you don’t even need to bring anything. Even in high season (I was there in the middle of July), it is not crowded at all. Relax!

Tip Bring a snorkel mask. The water here is very clear, so snorkeling here is a lot of fun highly recommended.

Visit Museo Histórico Municipal

Trinidad has a number of museums worth visiting. I visited the Museo Histórico Municipal, a beautiful colonial building where you can see how the rich people used to live here. The highlight is the large tower that you can climb for a beautiful view of Trinidad and the surrounding landscape.

Discover Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor, the large central square in Trinidad, is an open-air museum in itself. Here you will see cobbled streets, beautiful pastel-colored houses, and many palm trees. There are a few benches, so bring a book and relax here for an hour or two.

Go hiking in Topes de Collantes

Just north of Trinidad, you can find Parque Natural Topes de Collantes, a beautiful mountainous area full of caves and waterfalls. Exploring the beautiful hiking trails in this area is one of the best things to do in Trinidad.

To get to Parque Natural Topes de Collantes, you can take a taxi from Trinidad or join an organized tour. I’ve done both and found the organized tour to be more fun. With an organized tour, you can get further into the park than with a taxi (which drops you off in front of the entrance) and you also get a nice lunch.

Go dancing at La Casa de la Música

One of the best things to do in Trinidad is to immerse yourself in a Cuban party. In the evening, walk up the stairs towards the Casa de la Música, which can be found on the right side of Plaza Mayor. Here you will find fun every night with Cuban live music and many cheap cocktails. A nice mix of tourists and Cubans, everyone is having a good time. It’s a big party as you can see in the video below.

Go out for dinner

There are several special restaurants in Trinidad, also in the beautiful colonial buildings. In addition, you can often eat in one of the paladares, these are kind of restaurants in houses of the locals and usually, the food here is much better than in the restaurants.

To find the best restaurants and paladares, it’s best to ask fellow travelers about their experiences. It changes on a daily basis!

Book a trip to Cuba

Would you like to book a trip to Cuba? These are some useful websites:

  • You can find the cheapest plane tickets via Skyscanner or Momondo.
  • When I traveled to Cuba it was still very difficult to book a hotel room or room in a casa online. Now you can just use Booking.com. Which is so convenient!
  • It is mandatory to take out good travel insurance when you travel to Cuba. I would suggest checking out Insubuy.
